IJG Business Climate Monitor April 2017

After a recovery of 0.81 points in March, the index fell by 1.48 points in April. This means that for four months in a row, the index is at below 50 points, the threshold which indicates that the economy is contracting.

The Monitor has now fallen for the second consecutive month, indicating a contracting economy. This is in line with national account figures from the Namibia Statistics Agency.

The latest edition of the index finds that the ‘technical recession’ might be short-lived. It appears the index started to stabilise after a downward trend since June. Meanwhile, the drought continues to put industry and agriculture under pressure.
