The Namibian government has long argued that Namibia’s minerals should see more value addition before they leave the country. In the government’s view, Namibia is exporting raw materials while importing finished goods, representing a missed opportunity for local economic stimulation and a drain on foreign reserves. In response, mining companies have responded that they actually do some processing they often do not have the necessary expertise for beneficiation.

This report looks in detail at the state of beneficiation in Namibia as well as challenges and opportunities for future growth. It notes some major challenges to the creation of more beneficiation opportunities, notably an infrastructure deficit and a lack of skilled individuals. Still, some opportunities exist in both downstream and upstream sectors.
